Status: Task Force on Call

Guess who’s back – back again?

That’s a ridiculous question.

It’s obviously Dwight and Jim with your Weekly Weekend Wrap-Up (The Office Edition)!

In the words of Pink, “let’s get this party started on a [Sunday afternoon]”.

With no major festivals this week, your Task Force spent a lot of time in The Office (thus the edition title). Despite the lack of search and rescues, we still managed to save the world yet again – this time with postcards! If you’re an Italian/American soccer player who arrived this week for the BYSC International Invitational Cup, chances are you received one of our Tourism postcards to send home. Fact: Being a French-speaking linguist in no way qualifies you to speak Italian as Dania so proved when she misspelled “benvenuto” on twenty of the fifty handwritten postcards (Captain Kirk’s Note: This was ultimately corrected and peace was restored to the galaxy).

On a completely unrelated and much less exciting note, the Elora/Fergus brochures came in today! To the gentleman who came into The Office yesterday looking for one: they have arrived. You no longer have to stay awake at night worrying about not having the information you need on the Scottish Festival.

In case you have begun to wonder how we spend our time when not wittily blogging for your entertainment, today we successfully convinced a lovely couple from Saskatchewan to spend the night in Burlington instead of continuing to another city which, for privacy purposes, shall remain nameless. It may or may not be London. I guess that’s why they pay us the big money. We’re always thinking one step ahead. Like a carpenter that makes stairs.

Also, we’ve received a few comments that we’re perhaps a tad full of ourselves. Not true. Guess what? We have flaws. What are they? Oh we dunno…we sing in the shower? Sometimes we spend too much time volunteering. But in all seriousness, we’re pretty cool.

And now, an update on Tourism’s Burlington’s furious breakthrough into the rap scene! We present to you another stanza of “Stat That” (by our very own Nata-lee-zee).

Status: Task Force Deployed

And now introducing K&A’s new segment..dun dun dun DUN:
The Weekly Weekend Wrap-Up (3 points for alliteration)

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times – it was the Sound of Music in the sun, and the Sound of Music in the rain. One might say it was a tale of two cities...

Thursday night Divine Brown headlined and Kim Mitchell, Matt Dusk, and many other bands performed on sunny Friday evening. The crowds were rockin’, the vendors were stockin’ (their booths) and Kat and Nat were there for it all. They handed out programs (with a map on the back!), answered lots of questions and ate almost a full bar of delicious fudge. They worked out when they got back to the Batcave.

Saturday morning dawned cool, overcast and rainy. It was not for the faint of heart, but your Task Force, not unlike the Rescue Heroes, was more than up for the challenge. No one gets left behind. With our utility belts on waist and maps in hand, we braved the mist, put our 50 SPF sunscreen back in the cupboard and pulled out the hairspray to tame our frizz. Contrary to popular belief, we don’t just wake up this attractive.

Despite the rain, Saturday turned out great. The police officers busted out their ponchos, umbrellas and rain boots became the norm and people made creative use of plastic bags as seat covers. By 3 o’clock the sun was almost shining and the crowds and music were in full swing.

Sunday trumped all three days weather-wise with a high of 26 and mostly clear skies. Tom Cochrane and Red Rider certainly did not disappoint and Sound of Music 2009 went out with a bang!

In the spirit of music, we have a bit of a surprise for our faithful followers...a preview of a new Tourism Burlington Song written and produced by Alyssa, Celine, Dania and Kat. It was developed while stationed at the festival, and turned into a little something that we like to call “Stat That”:

Ahem.
♪ Stat that, a group of four
Stat that, write down some mo’,
Stat that, specialty store
Stat that, woOoOoOoh ♪

That last line was more of an adlib- We're just freestylin'... Sayin' whatever comes into the top of our head, like it's random.

We wanted to make a music video, but our Captain Kirks have yet to pass on their seal of approval. Maybe next week.

Till then, stay classy Burlington.

P.S. In case you were wondering what we look like, Sally is the strikingly handsome young chap in the middle, Kat is the brooding gentleman to the left, and Alyssa is the optimistically pensive fella to the right.
Watch out. We're everywhere.

Father's Day

I know everyone's very excited about the Sound of Music, but don't forget that this coming weekend is also Father's Day! We wanted to remind you, since there's so much hustle and bustle. That's just what we do here. We are that helpful.

Hakuna Matata,
The Task Force

Post Craft Show

Hello everyone!
This is N&N posting (like M&Ms, but one letter further in the alphabet... and better). Just so you know, N&N stands for Nicole and Natalie, two of your 7-week summer travel counsellors. We're here with an update about events in your own lovely Burlington.

This past weekend's craft show was a great success. The BAC acted as a fitting backdrop for the unique and inspired pieces the vendors were offering. Visitors purchased everything from skin care products to creative birdhouses (and Natalie spent more money than she should have). Thanks to all the vendors and visitors who made this event possible.

Also, a reminder that this coming weekend includes the much anticipated Sound of Music Festival! Not only that, but it's the 30th anniversary of this event which has become a Burlington summer tradition. Thursday opens with performances by Divine Brown and Ronnie and the Jets. Friday's headliners include Kim Mitchell, Matt Dusk, and Robert Michaels. Saturday afternoon brings us the Wilkinsons, USS, and the Sicilian Jazz Project, while the evening ushers in Sloan, Paul James Band, and the Elizabeth Shepherd Trio. The festival concludes with Sunday's lineup of Tom Cochrane and Red Rider, the Stills, and the Tartan Terrors. It sounds like it will be a great festival, complete with not only music, but great food, rides, and fun for all. Be sure to drop by (and make sure to visit our Burlington Tourism tent - it'll be bright and yellow).

Scheduled for the same time as SOM is Downtown Streetfest, located on Pearl St. This festival offers more music, food, and sights to see.

Not only do we have info about big Burlington events, but we also have info about locations all over Ontario! Today alone we recieved brochures for the CNE, Oshawa, and the South Georgian Bay (for your info, we also have one about the SouthERN Georgian Bay). They were promtly filed and labelled by Natalie, who was far too excited to have recieved that many new brochures. We're expecting new Niagara brochures soon! Exciting! Oh the adventures...

If you have any questions or comments drop by our spiffy Tourism Office at 414 Locust St., or give us a call at (905) 634-5594. Ask for the Task Force. We'll know what you mean.

Don't Stop Believing,
N&N

Status: Task Force Engaged

Hello and welcome to the first ever Tourism Burlington blog! To get started, we’re going to introduce the Tourism team, henceforth known as the Task Force. We’re Alyssa and Kat, your faithful blogging duo (also known in some circles as Batman and Robin/Bonnie and Clyde/Calvin and Hobbes/House and Wilson…you get the point right?). This is our second summer back at the office and we’re looking forward to another great season. Also blogging this year are Celine (back for her third summer) and Elizabeth (who’s been here longer than we can remember). New members of the Task Force include Nicole and Matt, who spend their days dedicated to various projects including the upcoming Taste of Burlington, a directory of Burlington sports organizations and even a listing of all Burlington cemetaries. Natalie (aka the Brochure Queen) and Dania, our resident French-speaking linguist, will be joining the team for the first seven weeks of the summer. During the second seven weeks we will have Will and Andrea joining us as well.

“What does such a fine team of ridiculously good looking individuals do all summer?” you might ask… Good question. Our main purpose in life is to help our lovely visitors with any and every question they might have, ranging from “where is the bathroom?” to “when is Sound of Music this year?” to “are there many buffalo in the area?”. You name it, we know it (within reason). Aside from that, we work on different projects throughout the office. Today, Alyssa and I organized the brochure cabinets. We also got a chance to wander the streets with Matt and Dania dropping off flyers for the upcoming Streetfest – taking place June 20th in conjunction with Sound of Music (check out www.soundofmusic.ca for more details). We’re lucky enough to have one of the best jobs ever. Question: how great is it? Answer: Natalie actually came in on her day off just for fun.

Of course, we wouldn’t be as ridiculously awesome without the help of our two favourite ladies. Sally and Linda C. head up the Task Force. They are the Zordons to our Power Rangers, the Captain Kirks of our Star Fleet and the Professor Xaviers to our X-Men (and Women). With their help, we answer tough questions like “what cities are close to Lake Simcoe?” and “where can I find a good foot doctor?”. They guide us and keep us in line when we talk too loud.

Not to be forgotten are the other staff members of Tourism Burlington. Pam, Simone and Linda O. work behind the scenes doing all sorts of important and useful things.

Wow, this is really long… We’re going to sign off, but we’ll be back next week to update you with some Festival of Fine Art and Craft stories and begin our cleverly entitled segments.

Till next time, stay classy Burlington.
